But least do we know that there exists some planetary astrological gemstones too, which are also known as Jyotish Gemstones. These nine mystical astrological gemstones are associated with each planet. They are natural and rare to find. Each of these gem species has alluring colour, flawless clarity and precise cutting.

Researchers suggest that the reason behind this star effect is an optical phenomenon that is called as “Asterism”. It is triggered by the dense presence of minute fibers of rutile or silk. The stars are produced by the light reflecting from needle-like presence of rutile aligned perpendicular to the rays of the star.

Star Rubies are very rare and it can be said that out of 100 ruby stones only three would be star rubies. So going by this average it can easily be comprehended that star rubies are rare and hence precious. Global production is able to yield a very small quantity of star rubies that are of good quality.

Commonly rubies are red in color but star ruby is mostly available in pinkish-red, purplish-red or purplish-brown color. The distribution of color is often patchy and a red ruby with a perfect star is very uncommon and expensive.

An expert from Ankur Gems says that it is important to know that cutting is very significant in order to reveal the star effect in a ruby. It needs to be cut in a certain shape and size to obtain the desired effect.

The value of Star rubies can be determined by assessing the strength and sharpness of the star and secondly by assessing the intensity and attractiveness of its overall color. Sometimes the star is distorted or sometimes it isn’t properly visible, so in such cases the price of the star rubies get affected.

They are mostly found in Burma (Myanmar), Srilanka, India, Africa, Vietnam, Thailand, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Australia, Cambodia and United States.
